Officials from the City of Poughkeepsie Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) announced the discharge on North Water Street shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, before the storm surged in the region. In total, an estimated 500 gallons of sewage was dumped into the river per minute until it could be controlled at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
It was not immediately clear if any public areas were potentially impacted by the discharge. In total, more than 900,000 gallons were released.
The discharge was caused by the weather conditions, as the strong storm front produced heavy rain that backed up the system. Officials attempting to clean up at the scene and prevent the discharge were able to partially treat the waste with disinfectants.
Similar discharges were reported in parts of Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties, with hundreds of thousands of gallons of waste being poured into the river.
